Sports dentistry and mouth guard

In 2016 FDI(World Dental Federation) adopted policy statements of sports dentistry, and launched a "Sports & Dentistry" project from 2019 with Sunstar. Whether people practice their sport as a hobby or professionally, their oral health is an important element of their general health and impacts their athletic performance. This project highlights the basic oral care recommendations for sports-active people. Also, it is highly recommended to wear the mouthguard when engaging in contact sports. Young athletes face greater risk of dental traumatic injuries, because they may not receive proper safety education and/or training. Although the indication of custom-made mouthguard has increased, and the effectiveness for preventing dental injuries has been demonstrated, there is a need to further specify sport characteristic, age, material, design, as well as time of use. In this presentation, the scientific evidences and available information of sports dentistry and mouthguard will be described.
